## Commentary

HT 31: after the vessel ideogram *416-VS (quantity 10), one of Gordon's HT 31 vessel quartet (Gordon 1966, §115). Gordon read ka-ro-pa as karpu, Akk. karpatu 'earthen container, pot' (CAD K 219), one of the commonest vessel words in cuneiform. PA₃ = ba writes k-r-b, but the root is √k-r-p: a single p is voiced between vowels, here between o and a. Stieglitz took up the identification with the Akkadian and Ugaritic cognates (Stieglitz 1971, 110). Rendsburg cites 'Min. ka-ro-pà (HT 31.3) (Gordon, EML, 26, 30, 39; Stieglitz 1971)' as cognate with Ugaritic krpn 'carafe, goblet, flagon' (Ugaritic Dictionary, forthcoming). Its six Ugaritic passages (El blessing Kirta, ʿAnat drinking wine, Baʿal's feast) make it a drinking vessel. Ugaritic krpn 'cup, goblet' (DULAT 452) carries the afformative -n (Dahood 1965, 161, apud Stieglitz 1971, 110 n. 2) that Minoan karp- lacks. Weak point: PA₃ = ba is a proposed value; Gordon's p (PA₃ as PA) gives √k-r-p without the voicing. One attestation.
