- Root: [\*ytn ~ \*ntn](<https://linear-a.ai/roots/2608/index.md>) 'give'
- Kind: Personnel
- Language: Semitic
- Signs: NA (na) · TU (tu) · \*301 · NE (ne)

## Compared forms

- Hebrew: נָתִין *nātīn* — nātīn (נָתִין) "temple servant, dedicated one"—singular of Nĕtīnīm (נְתִינִים), Ezra 2:43, 8:20; 1 Chr 9:2. Passive participle of √n-t-n. The Levites themselves called nĕtūnīm nĕtūnīm "given, utterly given" (Num 3:9)
- Ugaritic: ytn / ntn "to give"—one of the most common Ugaritic roots
- Amorite: the passive natūn 'given' in names: NATUN-UM Natūnum, ʾIL-I+NATUN Ilī-natūn (Gelb 1980, nos. 5014, 2756)
- Akkadian: *nadānu* — nadānu "to give"; nādinu "giver" (active participle)
- Phoenician: Mattan (מתן) "gift"—common PN element (Mattan-Baal); institutional parallels in Phoenician temple servant classes
- Athena: A-TA-NA = ʾatanā 'She-who-gives' (lexicon PROBABLE)—NWS feminine of √y-t-n (> ʾ- via I-y weakening). NA-TU-NA-NE with initial n- preserves √n-t-n; the coexistence of both allomorphs points to a pre-split isogloss stage

## Attestations

- [SKO Zc 1](<https://linear-a.ai/texts/SKOZc1/index.md>): NA-TU-\*301-NE — the dedicated one (passive) or the giver (active)—from √n-t-n 'to give' + -ān suffix

## Commentary

SKO Zc 1, an inked inscription from the Skoteino cave, broken on both sides: NA-TU-*301-NE, with *301 = na (288 occurrences at 16 sites), so na-tū-nā-n(e), the final E dead. natūnān 'the dedicated one', the qatūl passive participle of √n-t-n 'to give' with -ān, TU for the ū. Compare Heb. nĕtūnīm 'given ones', the Levites given to sanctuary service (Num 3:9), and the post-exilic Nĕtīnīm, temple servants (Ezra 2:43; 8:20; 1 Chr 9:2), an institution traced to the Gibeonites (Josh 9:27). Ug. ntn, ttn /tatinū/ 'to give', BH nātan (Huehnergard 2012, 52; App. C, 6–7). Rival: nātānān 'the giver', the qātāl active participle with -ān, a title of the Goddess at a cave sanctuary, beside A-TA-NA-TE ʾAtanat 'She-who-gives' (√y-t-n). One attestation. See MA-TI-TI.
