## Commentary

ZA 5a and ZA 15a, both Zakros. samidē 'groats, semolina', a borrowed Akkadian commodity noun with a Minoan ending -E; it takes quantity 4 on ZA 15a, and its slot on ZA 5a, after KI-NI-MA 7 and O-TA-NI-ZA-SE 6, admits a commodity or a name. It shares the smt skeleton with JA-SU-MA-TU, with SA-MA-TI (HT 39), whose slot shows no commodity, and with Ug. ṣmd /ṣimdu/ 'pair, yoke, team', BH ṣemed (Huehnergard 2012, 130–135). Rival: a name of the kinship-theophoric X-dāʿ type, Šumī- or Šammī-dāʿē 'my Name knows', beside A-MI-DA-U and A-MI-DA-O ʿAmmī-dāʿ; Amorite has SA-MI-DA-ḪU-UM Śami-daʿum (Gelb 1980, no. 5450), and the Bible ʾĂbîdāʿ and ʾEldāʿā (Gen 25:4). Against the rival, its -U/-E endings need a final-vowel variation, and Howard (JSS 68.1) documents u > a only in √ypʿ names (Niqmī-yapuʿ > Niqmēpaʿ).
