# How to

> How to read a row: the columns, the verdicts and what this copy leaves out.

A page of the Linear A Lexicon's research wiki, in [Wiki](<https://linear-a.ai/wiki/index.md>) › [Kaphtor Dictionary Distillation](<https://linear-a.ai/wiki/distillation/index.md>). Updated 2026-11-05.

Each range page lists the entries a dictionary prints on twenty of its pages, in order, and what kaphtor's `semitic_roots.json` does with each.

## Columns

- **Entry**: the entry's id, the book's siglum, the PDF page and its place on that page (`halot:p0100#1`).
- **Headword**: the entry's headword as the book prints it.
- **Kind**: what the book's index files it as: a word, a root, a name, a place.
- **Status**: the entry's verdict, below.
- **Lane**, **Worker**, **Date**: the review that recorded the verdict.

## Status

- `cited N`: row N of `semitic_roots.json` cites the entry; several rows are listed when several cite it.
- `ambiguous`: a row cites the entry's page, and the cite names no single entry on it.
- `open`: no verdict yet.

A recorded verdict is one of these:

- `proposed`: a new row or an addition to a row, given as a proposal (its index in `proposal`)
- `no_second_branch`: no cognate outside the book's branch, so no row
- `present_uncited`: a database row holds the material without citing the page (its row in `number`)
- `onomastic`: a personal, divine or place name
- `loan`: a loanword into the language
- `cross_reference`: a see-entry or a phrase that sends to another entry
- `unreadable`: the page image cannot be read there

`present_uncited (row N)` names the row that holds the material.

## What this copy leaves out

The private wiki gives each verdict with the reviewer's reason, which quotes or paraphrases the entry: its glosses, abbreviations and the scholars it credits. Most of these dictionaries are under copyright, so this copy gives the verdict alone, and leaves out the notes under each range page. Headwords stay: each is a word of the language, as the root pages of the Linear A Lexicon print them.
