HALOT 888 calls the etymology uncertain: I ʿrp + -l, or a base \*ġrpl beside Arb. ġrf 'cover'. Ug. ġrpl favours the second against 2485 \*ʕVrp- 'cloud' (Ug. ʿrpt). HALOT 888 also lists Arb. ʿarfal &gt; ʿaffal, with ʿ against Ug. ġ.
