Notes

Geez ḫǝbay is from Arabic ḫābiya, itself from Aramaic-Syriac ḥābītā 'wine jug' (LGz. 257, after Fraenkel 168). CAD Ḫ 20 takes the Syriac as a loan from Akkadian *ḫābitu; Kaufman 1974, 53 rejects that view, holds that the Arabic ḫ makes a loan through Aramaic unlikely, and finds the origin obscure.
