Notes
Arabic šaḫala 'to strain (a drink)' (Tāj 29:251) has š where *š gives Arabic s. Akkadian šāḫilu 'strainer, filter' (CAD Š/1 96–97) and Syriac šaḥlā 'strainer, filter; firepan; lamp saucer' (Payne Smith 571) are two formations; CAD Š/1 97 cites von Soden for taking the late NB references of šāḫilu as Aramaic šᵉḥīlā 'bucket'. Cf. 3215 *nḫl 'to sieve'. Not 399 *šVḥal- 'make a cloth', nor 2414 *šaḥal- 'lion'.
