Notes

Hebrew ś, Syriac s and Arabic š point to *ŝ. HALOT 1320 takes śîaḥ as a primary noun with no connection to I śyḥ 'to grow' (885 *ŝVyVḫ-), and gives the Syriac as Artemisia Judaica. Lane 1628 places the plant in plains and meadows and adds that brooms are made of some species. HALOT 1321 reports Hoftijzer-Jongeling 1120 taking Neo-Punic hšḥm as another word, 'tools or recipients'. Not K0496 *śVwVḥ- 'sprout'.
