Commentary

PK Za 11 .2 […]-RE · PI-TE-RI · A-KO-A-NE ·, the one witness; damaged A-[…]-NE stands in the same slot on PK Za 12. A title in apposition: PI-TE-RI A-KO-A-NE ‘Pitrī, the priest’, ha-kōhan with the Canaanite article ha-. Ug. khn ‘priest’ (DULAT 428), Heb. kōhēn (HALOT 461–462), Phoenician khn (Krahmalkov 2000, 224). The second A writes the a that h keeps in Heb. kōhănîm, JArm. kāhănā (HALOT 461) and Arb. kihānat ‘divination’ (Lane 3004). Name and title stand as in Heb. ʾahărōn ha-kkōhēn ‘Aaron the priest’ (Exod 31:10). Rivals: a second personal name, the second of two dedicants (Davis 2013, 42; Thomas 2020, 8, 10); Akk. and Nuzi Aḫūni ‘our brother’ and Arb. ʾaḫawāni ‘two brothers’, which fit the signs poorly. Weak point: one attestation.
