Commentary

HT 117a (Haghia Triada, Casa Room 9, LM IB): one of ten entries counted 1 each, KU-RO 10, under the heading MA-KA-RI-TE ‘merchants’, alongside KU-RA-MU Kurmu ‘Vineyard’, KU-PA₃-NU Kubānu and NA-DA-RE Nadr ‘Vow’. Ugarit has the man’s name Tiyaru, ti-ya-ru₃ (RS 14.0016 r 3); Linear B has the man’s name te-ja-ro (KN V 479). Akkadian names give the sense: tajjāru ‘merciful (god)’, from târu ‘turn, relent’, in Aššur-tayyār, Sîn-tayyār and Tayyār-ilu (AHw 1304; CAD T 60), of which Teyar is the short form; tajārtu is the god’s ‘forgiveness’, lit. ‘return’ (CAD T 59). Rival: tayyār ‘trader’, √t-w-r ‘travel about’: Heb. hattārîm ‘traders’ (1 Kgs 10:15; HALOT 1708), Ug. /t-r/ ‘to scour, travel through’ (DULAT 862–863), on the qattāl pattern of Heb. ṣayyād ‘hunter’ (√ṣ-w-d). One attestation.
