Notes

Jastrow 1698 takes tᵉrîs from ʾ-r-s ‘bind, join’ (Jastrow 124). Not from Greek θυρεός, a derivative of θύρα ‘door’ whose sense ‘shield’ is Hellenistic (DELG 446–447). Not 1206 *daraḳ-, K0145 *mVgVn- or 3497 *gwb, the other shield words.
