Commentary
Administrative list under U-TA₂ · NI 40, HT Scribe 3. GORILA reads .2–3 PA₃-DA-KU-SE-NE[ ]6½, broken after NE, and allows a divider after PA₃ (GORILA I 171), as Ugaritic often sets one after a one-syllable proclitic, b. bnk (CAT 1.6:I:46; Tropper 2000, §21.412a): bi= ‘by, with’, the proclitic of PH 6 I-DA-PA₃-I-SA-RI. Rival: bād(i) ‘in the charge of’, as Kition no. 84 bd with a personal name and a count of workmen (Krahmalkov 2000, 97) and CAT 4.145:9–10 bd rb ḥršm (Huehnergard 2012, 76, 94); Linear B pa-ro with a personal name is the Aegean parallel (Killen 2024, 103). Weak point: HT 103 wants bd ‘in the charge of’, and no Semitic text shortens bd to b. NI is the fig: AB 30 draws a fig branch (Montecchi 2024, 178, following Neumann 1957, 157–58); NI 40 is no total, and no KU-RO follows. DA-KU-SE-NE recurs with 1, and on HT 104 as DA-KU-SE-NE-TI; the first writing is damaged in two sign positions in SigLA. DA-KU-NA is Daguna, a name on Dagan (HALOT 213). *188 is buṭnu, the Pistacia product (HALOT 121; CAD B 358). KI-RA kirû ‘garden, orchard’ (CAD K 411) also heads the fig entry on ZA 8; rival qīru ‘hot bitumen’ (CAD Q 270).
Epigraphic note
GORILA I 170–171. The tablet is damaged along the left edge, but GORILA marks no lost sign before PA₃. It allows a possible interpunct between PA₃ (AB56) and DA-KU-SE-NE; their segmentation is therefore uncertain. If PA₃ is separate, its position before a probable personal name and quantity closely parallels Ugaritic/Phoenician bd /bādi/ or /bīdi/ ‘in the charge of’: Kition no. 84 repeats bd + personal name + counted workmen (Krahmalkov 2000, 97). PA₃ may accordingly be b- ‘in/by’ or a local shorthand for bād(i), but Semitic spelling does not independently establish bd > b, and Linear B does not normally omit final /d/. The functional Aegean parallel is Linear B pa-ro + personal name ‘in whose care/in the charge of’ (Killen 2024, 103). The first DA-KU-SE-NE is damaged in two sign positions in SigLA. NI 40 is an item, not an expressed total: no KU-RO occurs, and the remaining quantities must not be subtracted from it. NI is the conventional Aegean fig ideogram (AB30/FIC); TE-*301, if *301 = NA, is separately comparable with Semitic /tēnā/ ‘fig’ but does not prove NI’s value. U-TA₂ probably labels an entity or place; Uta/Uda is only a comparative name reading. DA-KU-SE-NE is a probable Hurrian-style name in -šenni ‘brother,’ not an exactly attested Dakušenni. KI-RA remains uncertain: Akkadian kirû ‘garden, orchard’ fits its two contexts, while qīru ‘liquid bitumen’ is a formally close alternative.
