Notes

Ugaritic ʿmq nšm 'the toughest of men' (1.17 VI 45); Gzella reads 'wise' (DULAT 162). HALOT 848 lists Hebrew II ʿēmeq 'strength' (Jr 21:13, 47:5, 49:4) as uncertain in every passage. HALOT 847 notes that CAD E 151 f. relates only emqu 'wise' to emēqu. Cf. K0638 *ʿVmVq- 'deep', 3365 *ʕamḳ- 'middle'.
