Notes

HALOT 188 heads the root with Amharic gāla 'to be red-hot' and Yemeni Arabic jaihal, mijhal 'dry sticks'. Arabic ǧayhal, miǧhal 'a piece of wood with which one stirs live coals' (Lane 477) has h for *ḥ; LGz. 187 writes ǧayḥal.
