Notes

Kaufman 1974, 88 takes the Hebrew, Rabbinic Hebrew, Jewish Aramaic and Syriac piel and pael 'to provoke' as the same verb as Akkadian gerû 'to begin hostilities', and allows Akkadian influence only on the Egyptian Aramaic formula 'to initiate a lawsuit'; Arabic jaraʾa 'to dare' has an unexpected hamza. Payne Smith 77 files the pael under grā 'to run or trickle down'. HALOT 202 compares Arabic jry 'to flee, run', which is 467 *gVrVy- 'run, flow'.
