Notes

LGz. 549 sets Arabic ṣafuqa 'be compact, be thick' beside the Geez. Arabic s-forms beside the ṣ-forms: safuqa 'was thick, substantial, close, or compact, in texture' and safīq (Lane 1373), safīq a dialectal variant of ṣafīq (Lane 1702); s and ṣ alternate through the Arabic root, as in safaqa and ṣafaqa 'shut (a door)' (Lane 1373). Geez safaqa (MA) 'grow thickly, grow densely' is a secondary form of ṣafaqa (LGz. 488); see SA093. Arabic ṣafaqa 'strike so as to make a sound, clap' is another sense (Lane 1700; see 2930). Tigrinya č̣äfläqä 'crush, squash', Tigre č̣äfläqa 'pound, hammer', with augmented l (LGz. 549).
