Commentary
KN Zb 40 .1 A-PA-KI, then U-NA-A, incised on a pithoid jar from the Unexplored Mansion, Knossos, in an LM II destruction deposit, the jar typologically LM I and the inscription LM IB (Popham 1976, 102–106, apud Owens 1998–99, 148), with a domestic shrine and a goddess figurine on the upper floor (Owens 1998–99, 148). A writes the 1cs ʾa- (as in ʾata-inawaya), PA b with a dead vowel, KI kī: ʾabkī, the G prefix form, Heb. ʾebkeh ‘I weep’ (Isa 16:9; Jer 48:32). A- marks the G, since a D 1cs takes ʾu- (Ar. ʾu-, Fischer 2002, §211b; Akk. ubakka). Rivals: the G present ʾabakki, which fills every vowel, Akk. a-bak-ki (ORACC P273162, P338383), Geʿez bäkäyä ‘flere, lamentari’ (Dillmann 1865, no. 4035) with the yəqättəl imperfect (Gragg 1997, Table 13.3), a present East and South Semitic keep and Central Semitic lost, and ʾa-pak- ‘jug, bottle’, Heb. pak, a small flask (HALOT 926), a poor fit for a pithoid jar, with Ug. bk ‘beaker’ (DULAT 216). Weak point: a lament on a household storage jar rests on the shrine context. One attestation.
