Commentary

HT 19 and HT 17, under the same heading RA-*164-TI · TE · VIN, name the third entry after SA-RO: DU-ME-DI 43½ on HT 19, SI-DA-RE 5 on HT 17. Dūmatī, of the dūmat- name family ‘enduring’: Amorite Dūmat-An (DU-MA-TA-AN, Gelb 1980, no. 1581), Hebrew Dūmāh, the Ishmaelite eponym (Gen 25:14), Arabian dmt, dwmt, dymt and dwmn under dm ‘enduring’ (Harding 1971, 242), Sabaic dwm ‘lasting’ (Beeston et al. 1982, 36; Biella 1982, 81). ME’s vowel is dead, DI writes tī after the nasal, and -ī is hypocoristic as in QA-*310-I qaynī. Rival: Dimti ‘the Tower-estate’, Ug. dmt ‘tower’ and the toponym dmt (DULAT 272), Akk. dimtum ‘tower; fortified area, settlement; district’ (Huehnergard 2011, 492), with the by-forms dintu and dindu (CAD D 144), which make DI regular. See DA-U-MI.
