Commentary
HT 11b: *86 KA 40, KA 30, KA 50, RU-ZU-NA KA 30, SA-QE-RI · KA 30, KU-RO 180: the sum is exact, and KA is the unit counted out to named recipients in 30s to 50s; on GO 2r KA ⅛ is a fraction of it. kapp ‘bowl, palm-measure’: Akk. kappu B ‘bowl’, and at Mari barley and linseed measured ina kappi maḫīrim ‘in the k. of the market’ (ARMT 13 100:7; CAD K 188). It stands alone on 149 HT nodules (HT Wa 1322–1470), the third commonest after *301 and KU, and appears on tablets at HT, KH, Milos and Gournia. On HT 85b and HT 140 KA is an entry of its own: KA 1 stands among KI-RE-TA₂ 1, PA 1 and DI 1 under KI-KI-RA-JA (HT 85b); KA 1 and ]KA 1 alternate with OLE+U as KA-PA ½ does on the same tablet, so KA there abbreviates KA-PA (HT 140; Montecchi 2010, 15). Rival: kaspu ‘silver’, which the abbreviation to one syllable weakens.
