Commentary
HT 96b (Haghia Triada, Casa Room 7, LM IB), a commodity tablet headed A-PA-RA-NE ·: QA-*118-RA-RE · *516 · GRA · 40¾, OLE+U 4, NI 2¹⁄₁₀, a large allocation of grain and oil. qaṭara(re) ‘incense, incense-offering’, √q-ṭ-r ‘to smoke, burn incense’, with *118 read ṭa, a proposed value: Heb. qəṭōret ‘incense’ (HALOT 1095), beside Akk. qutru ‘smoke’ and qutrinnu ‘incense, censer’ (HALOT 1095), Arabic qaṭara ‘to drop, distill’. -RA writes the root’s r and -RE an ending, or the noun pattern qaṭṭāra. Weak point: *118 = ṭa holds only once the DA and TA doublets are set aside, and standing alone before a numeral *118 is the talent sign. With t, the root is the same: Akk. qatāru ‘to make an incense offering’ (CAD Q 166) writes *q-ṭ-r with t by Geers' law (Huehnergard 1997, 588). One attestation. See QI-TI-RI.
