Commentary
KH 10, a Khania grain ledger (GRA 10 … A-KI-PI-E-TE GRA 90): flax beside grain, as in Ugaritic field-crop records. Ug. qṭ (I) ‘flax’, n. m. (DULAT 708), four times in KTU: the hippiatric prescriptions 1.71, 1.72 and 1.85 (št bln qṭ, linseed ground with mixed fodder) and 4.166:4, ḫmš mỉṣpt qṭ ‘five m. of flax’ in an administrative list; ḥwt qṭ (2.36:17) is a place name, qṭ (II). The Wanderwort *kito- ‘flax, linen’: Akk. kitû, Aram. kittānā, Sum. gada, Gk. χιτών, the Ugaritic branch with q for k. *118 at ṭa gives the emphatic the root requires. Rival: Aram. qaṭṭ- ‘cucumber’ (PS *qVšVʾ-: Syr. qaṭṭūṯā, Akk. qiššû), with ṭ for *118. Weak points: ṭa for *118 is a proposed value whose corpus test fails; QA-*118 has no number of its own, after I-PA-SA-JA ·, and the GRA 90 below belongs to A-KI-PI-E-TE.
