Commentary
KH 47: QA-NE 6 in a commodity context, which favours a commodity over a name; Khania is a western Cretan port with strong trade, and either imported lapis or local cane suits its accounts. Ug. qn has two senses: ‘reed, cane’, √q-n-y, qanē, BH qāneh קָנֶה ‘reed, measuring rod’, the source of ‘cane’ and ‘canon’; and ‘lapis lazuli’, a sense of Ugaritic alone. KA-NA, at the head of the HT 23a aromatics ledger and on HT 123+124b, is the same word with K for q, so the word stands at two sites, and the aromatics ledger favours the cane there over the stone.
