Commentary

HT 116a: SI-KI-NE GRA 12, then *304 12, in a list of grain and oil issues, after *OLIV+TU 2 and before QA-NU-MA GRA 20. Sikinet /šikinēt/ follows SI-KI-NE syllable for syllable, with the feminine final /t/ unwritten. Ugaritic šknt /sākinat-/ ‘female administrator, stewardess’ (Tropper 2000, 180, KTU 4.135:2; škn 4.36:3), and Hebrew has the same feminine participle, sōkenet, of Abishag (1 Kgs 1:2, 4); Akk. šakintu, oblique šakinte, ‘woman manager’ (CAD Š/1 165). The masculine is Ugaritic skn /sākinu/ ‘prefect’, syllabic sā-ki-ni (Huehnergard 2012, 156), and Amarna Canaanite sū-ki-ni /sōkini/, a prefect or commissioner. Rival: the masculine title ‘prefect, commissioner’. Weak point: one attestation. See *47-KU-NA.
