Commentary
SY Za 9, Syme, HM 5585, found 1987 (Muhly and Olivier 2008, 212–13, transcription only): two words, JA-PA-RA and JA-SE. JA-PA-RA yapʾara, the 3 m. sg. ya- prefix with √p-ʾ-r ‘glorify, adorn’, the ʾ unwritten as in JA-PA-QA yapqaḥ (PK Za 11, PK Za 12), final -A the volitive yaqtula of prayer. JA-SE yāṣē, the yāṣē of SI-JA-SE šī-yāṣē ‘which goes out’ (HT Zb 159, PE Zb 3), the disbursement marker there, the outpoured libation here: ‘may that which goes out glorify (her)’, verb first. Hebrew puts the root in the sanctuary: לְפָאֵר מְקוֹם מִקְדָּשִׁי ‘to beautify the place of my sanctuary’ (Isa 60:13), the hitpaʿel in Isa 60:21 and 61:3, and Ben Sira 50:20 (MS B) ובשם ייי התפאר ‘and in the name of YYY he gloried’. The root also gives pəʾēr ‘diadem’ and tipʾart ‘splendor’. Rivals: Ugaritic pʿr ‘proclaim (a name)’ (ypʿr šmthm, KTU 1.2 IV 11, 18), the same spelling once ʿ drops, attested only with šm ‘name’ as object; PS *wpr ‘pilgrimage’, a noun with no denominal verb and an initial w to lose. Weak point: one attestation of √p-ʾ-r; the support is yāṣē at two sites and the ya- prefix.
