Commentary
HT Zd 155 A-JU · NA-MA-MA-TI-TI-A319 (GORILA IV 130–131): NA-MA stands before MA-TI-TI-A319 where WI-JA-SU stands on HT Zd 157, the name of the party to the gift. Naʿma, √n-ʿ-m ‘grace’, the ʿ unwritten as in TA-NA-MA-JE and DU-NE-MI. Ebla writes the same name na-ma (ARET 15 25 r. ii 12), short for names such as na-ma-da-mu naʿma-Damu ‘grace of Damu’ (Pagan 1998, row 3812); Hebrew has Naʿămāh (Gen 4:22; 1 Kgs 14:21). Weak point: the stucco is worn at the first MA, and GORILA’s second transcription dots the second. Rival: nʿm ‘good, of fine quality’, as Ugaritic qn nʿm ‘cane of good quality’ (KTU 4.247:29; DULAT 605), but a Semitic attributive follows its noun, and NA-MA precedes MA-TI-TI. One attestation. Cf. TA-NA-MA-JE, DU-NE-MI.
