Commentary
HT 96a and b (Scribe 8, Casa Room 7, LM IB). HT 96b heads a major allocation: QA-*118-RA-RE qaṭara ‘incense’, *516 SIPRU, GRA 40¾, OLE+U 4, NI 2. The short form PA-RA-NE stands on HT 115a and b, by the same scribe. ʿabrāne, √ʿ-b-r with agentive -āne, ‘the crosser, the one from beyond’, as ʿibrī ‘Hebrew’, PA writing b. Amorite Ḥa-pí-ra-an, of the element ḤPR ḥapir-, *ʿapir-, the ʿApiru/Ḥabiru word (Huffmon 1965, 36, 202), matches A-PA-RA-NE with initial A for ʿa and -ān, cuneiform ḫ writing ʿ; so ḪABIR-AN (Gelb 1980, no. 1997). AP-RA-AN (Gelb 1980, no. 863) is a separate name, ʾApran, since cuneiform AP- writes ʾ and ʿ alike. Borger derives ʿapīru from ʿ-p-r ‘dust’ (apud Huffmon 1965, 202); PA writes p and b alike. Rival: √b-r-ʾ with -āne, ‘creator’, the aleph unwritten.
