Commentary

HT 25a and ZA 8, at two sites. ʾarīnīt ‘She-of-the-Lion’, the feminine gentilic -nīt on NWS ari ‘lion’, as I-ZU-RI-NI-TA i-ṯawrinīt ‘She-of-the-Bull’ takes the same -NI-TA on an animal root; bull and lion are the two central sacred animals of Minoan iconography. Both tablets enter A-RI-NI-TA with 1 in a list of personal names (HT 25a with DI-NA-U, U-RE-WI and I-KI-RA; ZA 8 with KU-TU-KO-RE and DA-I-PI-TA), so -īt here names one woman, where it also forms relational adjectives, abstracts and collectives (Fischer 2002, §§64, 116). Weak point: the lists set no title apart from a name.
