Commentary
KN Zf 31 · A-WA-PI ·, undotted, between dividers (GORILA IV 155), among the man’s names. Causative with ʾa-, final ʿ unwritten. The w is the root’s: Huffmon separates *wpʿ ‘be brilliant’ from *ypʿ ‘raise up’ (1965, 212), and Heb. hôpîaʿ, the theophany verb (Deut 33:2; Ps 50:2; 80:2), keeps it in ô < aw. The bare verb as a name, as Ug. ypʿ, syllabic ia-pa-ú (DULAT 958), and Amorite Ya-a-pa-aḫ. Cf. JA-WA-[?] on PE Zb 7, its third sign unread, for the prefix form. Rival: ʿawp ‘bird’ (Heb. ʿôp), which would need *306 for ʿa. See JA-PA.
