Commentary

Longest multi-word metal inscription in the Linear A corpus. 8 of 9 words are hapax legomena. Eight words are read, all SPECULATIVE; ]SI-ZA-NE-*310 is broken and unread. GORILA IV 155 prints two lines; ]SI[ stands apart before the first. The first line names the man, DA-DU-MI-NE, QA-MI-*47-NA-RA and A-WA-PI being name shapes at Ebla, Mari and Ugarit; ‘who stands: He is fire’ and ‘he shone forth’ are the theophany’s words (Ps 68:2; 50:2–3). It closes with the woman’s charge to serve him. The second line opens with A-DA-RA, the pin naming itself, and speaks to its wearer: she fastens it, and remembers him by it when she curls her hair. A man’s gift of a silver hair pin to a woman, a row of crocus blossoms on the reverse. Three of its verbs, √s-ʔ-d, √š-q-y and √ḫ-s-s, meet in one Ugaritic scene: Kothar-wa-Ḫasis brings the bow, and Danatiya gives him drink and serves him (KTU 1.17 V 19–31). The opening is corroded, about three signs lost between ]SI[ and ]SI-ZA-NE-*310 (GORILA IV 154): the likeliest place for the woman’s name, the subject of both ‘she’ verbs. The tail ZA-NE-*310 may be zānin ‘provider’, Akkadian zāninu, the king who feeds a temple (CAD Z 43, 45; √z-w-n, Heb. māzôn), *310 writing -in as in KI-*310-RE kinnāre: the man’s first title, answered by ‘she serves; give him drink’. SI would then end a word joined to it, as TE-SU-DE-SE-KE-I joins two. Rival: *310 as ni, a Hurrian name in -zanni, -zinni (Izzanni, ARM XVI/1 133; Izzinni, PIHANS 117, 132).

Epigraphic note

GORILA IV 155: line 2 TA-TE-I-KE-ZA-RE · [, KE dotted in both transcriptions and drawn differently in each. GORILA IV 154 (drawing): line 1 begins on the hook, whose bend is corroded. ]SI[ stands on the hook arm, room for about one sign above it before the broken tip; about three sign-spaces are lost between it and ]SI-ZA-NE-*310, whose SI survives as a trace.
