Commentary

HT 117a .8 DA-MI-NU 1, whole and undotted, in the second list headed SA-TA, before DA-NE-KU-TI 1 (GORILA I 197). Ḏā-Mīnu ‘He of the Portion’: the determinative-relative ḏā, written DA as in DA-QE-RA ḏā-Qīra, + MI-NU, as one word, as DU-RU-WI ḏu-luwwī is, of the type of Amorite Zu-i-la ‘He of God’ and Zu-dIš-ḫa-ra ‘He of Išḫara’ (Gelb 1980, nos. 6596, 6598), with MI-NU from √m-n-y ‘count, allot’ (Amorite manawum, manūtum, Gelb 1980, 25; Arb. Manāt, Q 53:20), MI- for Amorite ma- as in MI-NU-TE against Ma-nu-tum (Gelb 1980, no. 4528). Rivals: √m-n-n ‘bestow, favor’ (Lane 3024), ‘He of the Favor’; Ḏimenu, the Ugaritic name ḏmn, syllabic ZI-me-ni, ZI-me-nu (RS 34.169:2; DULAT 283), which DULAT leaves without etymology; Ugaritic tmn (II), ta-me-nu (RS 34.169:5; DULAT 858), which needs DA for t. Weak point: DA writes the accusative ḏā (Fischer 2002, §283), where Amorite and Ebla names open with nominative ḏū. Cf. LB da-mi-ni-jo, a shepherd at Knossos (DMic I 152–153).
