Commentary
One sign in three uses, the pair of TE terûmā. In entries of the form SI · n, ten times at HT, KH, PH and GO, it marks part of a quantity as tribute: HT 106 MI-NU-TE · CYP · 6 · SI · 5½ · SI · 1 · DA · 8 · SI · 3, sub-quantities within a CYP reckoning; on HT 30, SI · 4 opens a summary of several commodities. Alone, it stamps 92 HT nodules, one of the single-sign nodule categories: *301 231, KU 152, KA 150, SI 92, RO 91, ZE 46, TE 27, I 25. In ligatures it appears as SI+SE (3 tablets), QI+SI (ZA 9), SI+ME and SI-CYP (HT 130), ‘tribute-cypress’, on the model of VIN+TE ‘wine-offering’. Heb. šay (שַׁי) ‘tribute’ is brought to a temple or a divine authority at all three of its attestations (Isa 18:7; Ps 68:30; 76:12). SI šay, the owed or diplomatic gift, stands beside TE terûmā, the free donation to the sanctuary.
