Commentary
A commodity logogram, wine: 52 standalone at 10 sites, the widest distribution of any commodity. On HT 89 it follows KU-RO in a separate commodity section, the numeral 6 damaged. wayn ‘wine’: Heb. yayin, Ug. yn, Gk. οἶνος < *woinos. VIN+WA (twice, HT 27b) takes WA as the complement for the wa- of *wayn-; Canaanite is y-initial (Ug. yn; Amarna ye-ni, EA 84:44; Aphek ye-nu; GlOS 2, 366), so the complement writes the form before the shift. VIN, GRA and SA on HT 27b make the set of wine, grain and beer. Gordon’s ya-ne ‘wine’ (1966, §123) is KN Zb 4, whose corrected reading is JA-SI (see JA-SI). Geʿez wayn ‘wine; vine, grapes’ and Sabaic wyn ‘vineyard’ keep the w-. Weak point: in Linear A the *wayn- etymology rests on the VIN+WA complement alone, the commodity function on everything else.
