Commentary
Commodity ideogram for the olive fruit, apart from OLE šamnu ‘oil’, a logogram Linear B shares. OLIV and OLE stand on the same tablets with separate quantities (HT 50a, HT 101, HT 116a), fruit beside product. HT 123+124a gives OLIV 31 beside *308, pressed oil, 8¼, a record of olive processing; on HT W 231a OLIV alone labels a sealed commodity; OLIV+TU is a subtype, three times. zayt ‘olive’: Heb. zayit ‘olive tree, olive’ (HALOT 268–269), Ug. zt ‘olive; olive tree; olive grove’ (DULAT 984), Arb. zayt ‘olive oil’, zaytūn ‘olive’ (Lane 1274). OLIV stands alone 25 times on 18 documents from Haghia Triada, Arkhanes, Tylissos and Zakros.
