Commentary

ARKH 6: DA-NA-TU · KU heads the tablet, TE-RI on the next line. Feminine participle dānat- + -u, √d-y-n ‘to judge’; cf. Ug. dnty, Danel’s wife (KTU 1.17 V 16), Heb. Dînāh, and DI-NA-U. Da-na-tum is a man’s seal name, son of Sîn-taʾar, servant of Rīm-Sîn (RIME 4.02.14.2009). Weak point: -t may make an abstract ‘judgment’ as well as a feminine; the Babylonian Da-na-tum is a man. Rival: dannatu ‘hardship; fortress’ (CAD D 87), a heading. One attestation. See DI-NA-RO.
