Commentary

U-NA is wannā ‘and behold’, Ugaritic wn from *wa-hanna/u, the Hebrew wə-hinnē (Lipiński 1997, §27.25); the alphabetic spelling leaves the vowels open, and winnā is the rival. KA-NA-SI is kanāsī, the G verbal noun of √k-n-s ‘gather’ with the 1cs suffix -ī, ‘my gathering’, agreeing with the 1cs A- of formula position one. SI writes s and the hushed š alike, so KA-NA-SI also reads kanāšī, with the š of Aramaic knaš ‘gather’ and knāš ‘gathering’. The group is intact on KO Za 1, PK Za 8, SY Za 2 and TL Za 1, restored or partial on IO Za 2 and IO Za 9. Rivals: Syriac knšy ‘gather!’ (Peshitta Jer 10:17); kanāšī ‘my submission’ (√k-n-š, Akk. kanāšu ‘bow down’; Amorite ka-na-šum, ka-ni-šum, Ebla gi-ne-su-um, GlOS 1, 313), the sense of Arabic ʾislām ‘submission’ (Q 3:19).
