Commentary

A-DU occurs in 8 documents at two sites, regularly in initial or heading position: a heading or an entity. Gordon’s Addu/Haddu (Gordon 1966 §129): the spelling fits Old Babylonian Amorite and Akkadian Addu without initial h, and second-millennium syllabic forms such as eḫ-li-a-du keep the divine element (Howard 2023, 5). Ebla has ʾa₃-du, the DN Ḫaddu as a personal name (Pagan 1998, row 27). HT 92 places A-DU between TE and the commodities, the slot of a named recipient such as Addu. Rival: Akk. adû ‘work quota per man-day, work assignment’ (CAD A/1 135), which fits allocation and roster contexts. HT 95b sets A-DU over the items HT 86a divides between A-KA-RU and A-DU. Weak point: one reading must serve all eight headings, and only HT 85a, with *307+*307, selects the god. See A-DU *307+*307, A-DU-NI-TA-NA and A-DU-KU-MI-NA.
